Questions & Answers

Here we have collected the answers to the most common questions!

  • My Caress seat is different from the ones we see on several websites. Why is this so?

In connection with the implementation of the updated bicycle child seat standard, EN14344-2022, Caress seats produced as of May 2023 have been slightly changed.

Both old and new models are approved according to their respective standards and are totally safe to use.

The main changes of the Caress seat are

    • new carrier adapter
    • new steel bar (the plastic part is no longer present)
    • no locking pin
    • width adjustable harness with new shoulder paddings
    • possibility to lock the seat to the adapter/steel bar

Please note that the above parts of the new Caress are not backwards compatible. Please contact your retailer if you are in doubt about spare parts or accessories.

The seat has two different fastening methods, frame mounted or carrier rack mounted. The updated standard requires that the child seats designed to be attached on the luggage carrier, shall only be fitted to carriers conforming to EN ISO 11243:2016 marked with a 27 kg load capacity.

The production date is located on a white sticker on the lower right part of the seat.

  • Does the child bike seat fit my bike?

There are a number of different models and brands of bicycles, and it can be difficult to know if the bicycle and the child seat are compatible. We have therefore listed the Hamax specifications below, to help out in the process. If you are in doubt, always check with the bicycle manufacturer.

Hamax frame mounted bicycle child seats:

    • Frame tube diameter should be between 28-40 mm.
    • The frame tube must be round.
    • The seat cannot be mounted on bikes where the luggage rack is wider than 160 mm (please note that the luggage rack can be removed before fitting the child seat).
    • The seat cannot be mounted on bicycles fitted with shock absorbers.
    • Frame material: Do not attach the seat to carbon frames. A steel frame is recommended – for other materials, please check with the bicycle manufacturer that the frame material supports the mounting of a child seat.
    • The seat must always be attached to the frame, not to the seat post.
    • When attached, the distance between the seat base and the rear wheel/mudguard/carrier rack should be approx. 12 cm.
    • The seat must only be mounted on a bicycle which is suitable for this kind of load. Please ask your bicycle supplier for detailed advice.

Hamax rack mounted bicycle child seats:

    • The rack width must be between 120 -160 mm.
    • The rack tube diameters should be between 10-20 mm.
    • The rack tubes should be round. Other tube shape: Make sure that the carrier adapter has good grip and fitment of the rack.
    • The rack must have straight and parallel sides.
    • The rack must be approved to carry 27 kg and approved according to EN14872:2019.
    • For E-bikes with a battery on or below the carrier rack, make sure that the carrier adapter does not interfere with the battery.
    • The seat should only be mounted on a bicycle which is suitable for this kind of load. Please ask your bicycle supplier for detailed advice.
  • Can any of Hamax's bicycle seats be adjusted to the resting position?

Caress, Siesta, Amaze and Zenith Relax are all bike seats that can be adjusted to a reclining position.

  • From what age can children sit in a child bike seat?

Age alone isn't the only factor to consider when it comes to allowing children to sit in a bike seat. It is important to assess the child's physical development, strength and that they can sit upright without assistance. It is usually recommended that the child is at least 9 months old before starting to use a child bike seat, but this can vary based on the child's individual development and maturity. If you are unsure, you can consult the health centre.

  • I've worn out/lost a part to my Hamax bike seat, can I get a new one?

Most parts can be replaced, please contact your nearest Hamax dealer.
